Château d'Esquelbecq

Nord, Hauts-de-France

The Château d'Esquelbecq, in the Nord, dates from the early 17th century. It is a quadrilateral flanked by eight turrets. A band of white stone runs round it halfway up and is said to symbolise the power of the local lords.

It is reached by two bridges and surrounded by moats. A first wooden castle is thought to have existed from the 9th century, though nothing proves it. The last general restoration of the château dates from 1606. The estate also has French formal gardens next to a wooded park, and a gatehouse of 1590.
