Aubeterre-sur-Dronne
You discover an old village with its sloping lanes, paved with pebbles, dotted with flowered gardens. Some houses with white chalk façades are adorned with wooden galleries or balconies overflowing with flowers. The village overlooks the green Dronne valley and goes down to the river buried in greenery. In the centre of the town on the square, a statue watches over the citizens. At the very top of the village, the delightful church of Saint-Jacques keeps a very fine Romanesque façade. But the real jewel is the monolithic church of Saint-Jean dating from the twelfth century: located at the very bottom of the town, it is entirely carved into the rock and more than twenty metres high. It houses a sixth-century crypt. Aubeterre has remained a living and lively village. The walk there is delightful and charming: enjoy for example the fine white sand beach for river swimming.
