Château de Villebois-Lavalette

Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Built on the site of the Gallo-Roman oppidum, the château of Villebois-Lavalette dates from the tenth century and was altered and fortified in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries by the Lusignan family.

Made a duchy in 1622 by Louis XIII, the château was altered again in the Renaissance style by the Duke of Navailles, without losing its curtain wall flanked by six watchtowers or its twelfth-century Romanesque chapel, remarkable for its two storeys: the ground floor reserved for pilgrims on the way to Compostela and the upper floor reached directly from the lord's residence.
