Château de la Tranchade
The very old estate of La Tranchade, in the Charente, had a fortified castle from the Middle Ages, with many feudal dependencies. From 1697 its lords held rights of low, middle and high justice over the parishes of Garat and Sainte-Catherine. The seigneury is one of the oldest in the seneschalsy of Angoulême.
The families who owned the land and the château played an important part in local life over the centuries, notably during the Wars of Religion and the Fronde, with the affair of the Duke of Condé and the Duke of Longueville during the unrest that broke out in Guyenne and Périgord in 1651.
