Château de Balzac

Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

A château built around 1600 on the site of a noble house. When Marie de' Medici escaped from the château de Blois, she stayed six months in the house, and the lordship of Balzac became a meeting place for the elite of the time. The residence has a U-shaped plan: a large central block roofed in slate and lower tiled wings, the south one keeping the remains of a courtyard gallery. In the north-west corner stands a pavilion with a high pyramid roof. Seventeenth-century wall paintings, probably commissioned by Guez de Balzac, show trompe-l'œil architecture and mythological figures. The château was modernised in the eighteenth century, with two entrance pavilions framing a courtyard. Today listed on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments, it welcomes visitors in summer, notably with guided tours.
