Château de Bouteville

Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Built on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa, then of a fortified castle recorded in 1028, this castle belonged to the Angoulême family, then to the Lusignan, and was bequeathed in 1307 to King Philip the Fair. In 1360 the English took it; it was retaken at the end of the fourteenth century and ruined. Restored in 1453 by Jean d'Orléans, it was in ruins again in 1598. In the early seventeenth century, Béon du Massés had the present castle built. In 1804 the castle was dismantled; a fireplace is found at the château of Bourg-Charente and carved elements at the manor of Flaville in Bonneuil. In 1929–1930, Richard de Segonzac carried out some work, notably the roof timbers of the great hall. The exterior can be visited.
