Château de l'Oisellerie
In the late 15th century, at the Château de l'Oisellerie near Angoulême, in the Charente, falcons prized by the French court were bred and trained for hunting, notably gyrfalcons, symbols of power and majesty.
Since 1902 the estate has been an agricultural college training students for careers in vines, wine and wine marketing, and it has naturally taken the gyrfalcon as its emblem. The wines are made by pupils and students under the supervision of the cellar master and regularly win awards. The 270-hectare estate has a 35-hectare vineyard. It also offers walkers an arboretum along the Sentier des Moines, an 8 km loop down to the banks of the Charente and back.
