Château de La Rochefoucauld
The Château de La Rochefoucauld stands on a rock overlooking the Tardoire, in the Charente. A fortress was built there around 1026, and the La Rochefoucauld family has remained its owner since the beginning: the castle today belongs privately to François-Alexandre, fifteenth Duke of La Rochefoucauld.
The present castle dates mostly from the Renaissance, around 1520, and incorporates older defensive elements. It was modified in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its Italian Renaissance-style architecture includes two main buildings, a chapel, a great staircase and superimposed galleries. Its arcaded galleries on three levels are a rare case in France.
The castle suffered damage: in 1960, part of the keep collapsed, and a major restoration campaign began in 1990. It has been a listed historic monument since 1955. The visit lets you discover these architectural spaces.
