Château de Chillac

Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The lords of Chillac, in the Charente, are mentioned in many old texts, and the castle already existed in the 11th century, as a dependency of Barbezieux, but it disappeared during the Hundred Years' War. It was rebuilt in the 15th century on the foundations of the old castle.

It occupies a rectangular platform whose south side is formed by the 12th-century Romanesque church. The entrance was east of its apse, where the levelled ruins of a round tower lie. The building on the north curtain is a long two-storey wing with mullioned windows and a steep roof, served by a spiral staircase in a polygonal tower. The building at the north-west corner has two wings at right angles with mullioned windows, framed by three round towers, two with square roofs of flat tiles and the third with a very tall pepper-pot roof.
