Vogüé

Ardèche, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Vogüé is a village of the Ardèche, on the banks of the Ardèche river, in the Gorges de l'Ardèche community of communes. It has about 1,000 inhabitants and is among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. The château de Vogüé, whose origin goes back to the twelfth century, stands on a limestone cliff above the village's manor houses.

Local heritage also includes the church of Sainte-Marie and a railway viaduct built in 1877, now part of the Via Ardèche greenway. The village was hard hit by a flood in September 1890. Today, the economy rests on tourism and winegrowing. The river below is suited to swimming, fishing and canoeing, and the castle's terraced gardens overlook its waters.
