Viviers
The former capital of the Vivarais province, to which it gave its name, Viviers, in the Ardèche, overlooks a bend of the Rhône from its rocky promontory. The upper town, almost unchanged since the Renaissance, lines turreted mansions and carved façades along steep lanes.
The Cathedral of Saint-Vincent, seat of the former bishopric of Viviers, combines a Romanesque choir with a late Gothic nave rebuilt in the 17th century in a more classical style. The viewpoint by the statue of the Virgin, high above the town, offers a full panorama of the tiled roofs, the Rhône and the surrounding Vivarais hills.
