Vernon
At the gateway to Giverny, the village where Claude Monet painted his water lilies, Vernon, in the Eure, offers one of the most picturesque views of the Seine valley with its Vieux-Moulin, a half-timbered house balanced on the remains of the piers of a medieval bridge swept away by floods and wars.
The round towers of the Château des Tourelles, a former keep defending the bridge, complete this scene above the river, a favourite subject for painters since the Impressionist era. The collegiate church of Notre-Dame and the half-timbered houses of the historic centre complete a visit to this town, whose quiet riverside atmosphere contrasts with the summer crowds of Monet's village a few kilometres away.
