Évreux

Eure, Normandie

Built on the banks of the Iton, whose many branches cross the town centre in small canals lined with gardens, Évreux, in the Eure, was destroyed several times in its eventful history and rose again each time. The imposing Second Empire town hall, with its ornate façade and monumental fountain, reflects the town's renewed prosperity in the 19th century.

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame, largely rebuilt after the destruction of the Hundred Years' War, has some of the finest Gothic and Renaissance stained glass in Normandy. The gardens along the branches of the Iton, dotted with remains of the Gallo-Roman wall, make a pleasant walk in the heart of this human-scale Norman prefecture.
