Château de Gaillon

Eure, Normandie

The Norman château of Gaillon, in the Eure, is one of the very first Renaissance buildings in France. Its owner, Cardinal Georges d'Amboise, began rebuilding the medieval castle in 1502, and the work was completed around 1510. The cardinal's heir continued to embellish it until 1550.

Badly damaged after the Revolution, Gaillon became a prison. It is now being restored. Since 2011, thanks to the efforts of the town of Gaillon, the château has been open to the public.
