Val d'Isère
Val-d'Isère is a French commune and ski resort in the Savoie département and the Rhône-Alpes region, located in Haute-Tarentaise, in the Vanoise massif, at 1,850 m altitude. Its inhabitants are the Avalins and Avalines.
Val-d'Isère is considered one of the world capitals of skiing. On the La Daille site (Oreiller-Killy piste) and the Face de Bellevarde, it hosts each year men's and women's alpine ski World Cup events (the first-snow criterium created in 1955). Val-d'Isère was the setting for the men's alpine skiing competitions of the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games, and hosted the 2009 alpine ski World Championships.
The association of the Tignes and Val-d'Isère ski areas, called Espace Killy, has 155 pistes representing 300 km; it is not the first area by length but it is one of the highest and the one providing the most consistent and best snow.
