Sarlat-la-Canéda

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The town of Sarlat is a medieval town that reached its peak in the thirteenth century. The Carolingian abbey of Sarlat is the only one spared by the Vikings because it lay away from the Dordogne and its tributaries. It was rebuilt in the Romanesque period between 1125 and 1160.

Come and discover its market, its cathedral and the house where the writer La Boétie was born, its lanes and dressed-stone houses, as well as its inner courtyards...

Sarlat-la-Canéda, commonly called Sarlat, is the sub-prefecture of the Dordogne and the capital of the Black Périgord, on the edge of the Causses du Quercy. Its inhabitants are called Sarladais.
