Rochefort-en-Terre

Morbihan, Bretagne

Rochefort-en-Terre is a village of the Morbihan, ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, and voted the French people's "Favourite Village" in 2016. This very pretty town of character is built in a superb site, the Gueuzon valley, a landscape of granite rocks, woods and meadows.

Set on a rocky spur, this stronghold played a defensive role as early as the early Middle Ages. A castle, fief of the Rochefort family, was built there in the twelfth century, then destroyed and rebuilt several times. The flowered stone houses, cobbled lanes and pretty craftsmen's shops make a much-appreciated setting. The village is visited on foot and deserves a lingering stay.
