Riquewihr
A charming little Alsatian town producing one of the best wines of Alsace, the village, whose wealth stirred the covetousness of the powerful, gave itself ramparts and a fortress that did not always prevent pillaging. Each time, the winegrowers rebuilt even more elegant homes. The village's appearance is the one the sixteenth century left it. The Dolder, a thirteenth-century town gate, gives access to the old main street onto which a network of lanes is grafted. The type of Alsatian house reaches its most accomplished expression in Riquewihr. They offer every possible variation of carved half-timbering, oriels, inner courtyards adorned with old wells and fountains.
