Port-musée de Douarnenez

Finistère, Bretagne

The Douarnenez Port-Museum, in the Finistère, is a maritime museum devoted to boats and men, of Brittany and elsewhere. It is on the edge of the Port-Rhu ria and combines indoor spaces with a pontoon where historic ships are moored.

The permanent exhibition occupies about 1,500 m² and presents more than twenty full-size boats, working or pleasure craft, from many regions of the world. It covers maritime history, the know-how of sailors and shipwrights, life aboard and in port. A space evokes Douarnenez's sardine heritage, with a model room and a place devoted to canneries.

Nearby, several historic boats are shown afloat, some of which can be visited. The team of shipwrights restores boats on site, and the yard, visible from Place de l'Enfer, is sometimes the subject of guided tours. The museum also offers activities for families during school holidays.
