Pesmes

Haute-Saône, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Perched above the Ognon valley, this picturesque little town has kept all its charm despite a tumultuous past. Alternately pillaged, burned and ravaged by plague, Pesmes has always recovered from its trials and today offers the serene spectacle of its remains, scattered along its narrow, flowered streets: an old fortified gate, noble sixteenth-century dwellings and an imposing castle of 1519. The twelfth-century church is crowned with a glazed-tile roof. The choir houses a magnificent wooden triptych, the work of Jacques Prévost, a Franche-Comté painter said to have been a pupil of Raphael. The walk that runs along the castle ramparts and is lit up each summer by a splendid son et lumière offers a superb panorama over the Ognon valley and the bluish foothills of the Jura.
