Museum d'Histoire Naturelle de Toulouse

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie

Housed in a former seventeenth-century Carmelite monastery, at the entrance of the Jardin des Plantes, the Museum opened to the public in 1865. It is among the ten most important natural history museums in France. The Earth sciences are duly represented: meteorites, mineralogy, palaeontology, with a very important, world-renowned collection of Tertiary fossil vertebrates. The life sciences include a collection of birds (all the species of Europe and many exotic species), of mammals with in particular the 2nd collection of primates in France and many extinct or endangered species. The human sciences are also very well documented: anthropology with South American mummies and ethnography with Oceanian, African and Malagasy collections. It is the first museum in the world to have created a prehistory gallery (the Galerie des Cavernes). A botanical garden approved as a Jardin botanique de France can be seen at the end of the route. It illustrates the relationship of humankind to its environment.
