Musée international de la chaussure

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The International Shoe Museum is in Romans-sur-Isère, in the former Visitation convent, where it settled in 1971. Its origins go back to the 1950s, with a display of scenes of regional life. It took on its international dimension in 1968, when the town acquired the collection of the Parisian designer Victor Guillen.

The collection, estimated at more than 16,000 pieces according to sources, covers five continents and several millennia, from ancient Egypt to the twenty-first century. The route offers a general history of footwear through a series of themed rooms.

The twentieth-century section is particularly renowned: it presents designs by André Perugia, of which the museum holds a considerable set, as well as creations by Roger Vivier. The museum interests lovers of fashion, craft and the history of techniques, and recalls the industrial past of Romans, a great shoemaking town.
