Musée du Pays Châtillonnais

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Musée du Pays Châtillonnais - Trésor de Vix, in Châtillon-sur-Seine, in the Côte-d'Or, is a major stop on the Celtic route. Bright and modern, the museum occupies about 2,000 m², allowing it to display collections from the whole Châtillon area, whose soil was excavated from the late 19th century by members of the local archaeological and historical society.

The museum is best known for the Vix treasure. Discovered in January 1953, the tomb of the Lady of Vix is the most prestigious princely burial of the late first Iron Age, around 500 BC. The Lady, laid on a chariot, wore precious jewellery, including a gold torc, a masterpiece of Celtic goldwork. Beside her stands the famous bronze krater, of extraordinary size (1.64 metres high) and admirable beauty, one of the most powerful witnesses of Greek art.

The ex-votos from Gallo-Roman sanctuaries, the engraved woodblocks, the second largest collection of its kind in France, and the items bequeathed by Marshal Marmont are other highlights. The museum is run by the Pays Châtillonnais community of communes.
