Musée départemental de la Céramique
The departmental ceramics museum at Lezoux, in the Puy-de-Dôme, tells the thousand-year story of the region's clay, worked by artists and farmers and traded by merchants and travellers.
The small Arvernian town of Lezoux became the ceramics capital of the whole Roman Empire. From the 1st to the 4th century it was the great centre of production of the famous samian ware, a symbol of Romanisation. From the kilns of Lezoux's 1,200 potters came hundreds of millions of glossy red vessels, found by archaeologists throughout Europe.
