Musée de la Percée du Bocage

Calvados, Normandie

The Percée du Bocage museum is at Saint-Martin-des-Besaces, in the Calvados, between Caen and Vire. It is devoted to Operation Bluecoat, carried out from 30 July to 8 August 1944 by British forces to break through the Norman bocage, an offensive that helped encircle the German 7th Army in the Falaise pocket. Eight museum spaces bring back to life the daily life of soldiers and inhabitants during the Occupation, through many personal objects. A sound-and-light show presented with a diorama evokes the fighting and the life of civilians. An audio guide of about forty-five minutes is available in French and English. You can also see there the engine of a P-51 Mustang found in the commune. The museum is reached by exit 41 of the A84 motorway.
