Musée et sites archéologiques de Vieux-la-Romaine
The museum and archaeological sites of Vieux-la-Romaine, run by the Calvados département, is in the commune of Vieux, near Caen. It is set in the heart of the remains of Aregenua, the ancient city of the Viducasses. The traces of the town, discovered in 1580 with the unearthing of the Thorigny marble, are kept under the fields and gardens of the village. The département launched large excavation campaigns from 1982 and the museum opened in 2002.
The museum presents nearly 4,000 objects from the excavations, which tell the life of Vieux and its inhabitants from Antiquity to the early Middle Ages, using models, reconstructions, objects to touch and investigation trails. It offers each year a temporary exhibition and a cultural season.
Three archaeological sites complete the visit: the house with the great peristyle, the U-court house and the forum, generally closed to the public but open for guided visits during events. A Roman-inspired garden is also laid out. The site is labelled Tourisme & Handicap.
