Musée Balzac

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire

The château de Saché was built in the sixteenth century. Honoré de Balzac was a native of Touraine and his region deeply marked his work. From 1830 to 1837, the most prolific years of his career, the author of "La Comédie humaine" found there, with Jean de Margonne, the ideal refuge to escape his creditors and Parisian life. The museum was inaugurated in 1951 and presents letters, annotated manuscripts and plunges us back into the Balzacian atmosphere. The great drawing room keeps its "lions" wallpaper of 1803 that Balzac knew. A nineteenth-century printing press is also shown, the writer's first job, as well as the genesis of the famous statue by Rodin. A three-hectare park is the ideal setting to grasp the sources of Balzac's inspiration.
