Mont-de-Marsan
Founded in the Middle Ages where three rivers meet, earning it the nickname 'town of three rivers', Mont-de-Marsan, in the Landes, has kept from that period the Lacataye keep, a fortified tower now housing a museum devoted to the Landes sculptors Despiau and Wlérick.
The green banks of the Midouze, laid out as shady walks, cross the town centre and offer a peaceful setting to this prefecture, which is transformed every July by its feria, a great bullfighting and festive gathering that fills the streets with music. Between the ocean and the first Pyrenean foothills, the town remains deeply attached to Gascon traditions, from the course landaise to south-western cuisine.
