Monestiés

Tarn, Occitanie

It was once the chief town of the barony of the archbishops of Albi who enriched the Saint-Jacques chapel (11th and 16th centuries) with fine eighteenth-century statues, a magnificent fifteenth-century pietà and an exceptional "Entombment" made of eleven polychrome limestone figures, also dating from the fifteenth century. An old stone bridge spans the river and, following the bank, you reach the old fortified gate. A fountain, an old seventeenth-century tower and the church of Saint-Pierre — whose bell tower you will admire and which contains a magnificent seventeenth-century altarpiece and an important eighteenth-century painting — are the village's other riches. The walk through the streets with old houses that have kept their fine unity gives off a discreet charm.
