Limoges

Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Limoges spreads along the banks of the Vienne, crossed by the medieval Pont Saint-Étienne, which offers one of the finest views of the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, an imposing Gothic building built over several centuries. The city owes its worldwide fame to porcelain, made since kaolin deposits were discovered in the late 18th century, a living skill traced by the Adrien-Dubouché national museum.

The Boucherie quarter, the former stronghold of the butchers' guild, has kept its half-timbered houses and cobbled lanes around the chapel of Saint-Aurélien. Limoges has also marked the history of enamel, a craft dating back to the Middle Ages and still practised by a few workshops. The Bénédictins station, an Art Deco masterpiece topped by a green dome, adds a remarkable piece of railway architecture.
