Les Gorges de la Fou
The Gorges de la Fou are about 2 kilometres from Arles-sur-Tech, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, in the communes of Corsavy and Montferrer. The Fou stream, 8.8 kilometres long, has sawn through the limestone there over a length of 1,739 metres and to a depth of up to about 250 metres. In some places, the walls are separated by only a little under a metre, which gives the site its reputation as the narrowest gorges in the world.
The name is said to come from the Old Catalan "fou", meaning a precipice or narrow ravine. A circuit of metal walkways of about 1,500 metres had been installed: it allowed you to progress in the coolness of the canyon and drew more than 80,000 visitors a year.
In 2019, heavy rain caused the collapse of several hundred cubic metres of rock, which destroyed the walkways. The site was then closed to the public, with no known reopening date. Before any trip, it is therefore essential to check with the local tourist office whether the gorges are accessible again.
