Le Saut de l'Ognon
The Saut de l'Ognon is a waterfall 13 to 14 m high in the commune of Servance-Miellin, in the Vosges Saônoises, in Haute-Saône. Several metres wide, it is V-shaped.
Contrary to what you might think, it is not of natural origin: it results from industrial activity. In 1835, the entrepreneur Joseph François Varelle set up a granite works downstream, where stone blocks were sawn, cut and finished. To feed the machines, a dam was built on the Ognon, on the site of a former glacial formation. In high water, the dam's overflow forms the visible fall. The granite works operated until the mid-twentieth century.
The Ognon is a river of 213.6 km, a left-bank tributary of the Saône. The site is at the entrance of the village of Servance, before the climb to the Col des Croix.
