Lavardens

Gers, Occitanie

Lavardens is a fortified village of the Gers, perched on a rocky spur about twenty kilometres north-west of Auch. It is a member of the Most Beautiful Villages of France network. Its pale-stone, flowered lanes pass under the old ramparts and lead to a small square.

The castle, of medieval origin, was the seat of the counts of Armagnac. It was rebuilt in the seventeenth century by Antoine de Roquelaure, companion of Henry IV, then left abandoned after the Revolution. Listed as a historic monument, it now hosts visits, exhibitions and concerts in several rooms.

The church of Saint-Michel keeps old parts: the apse, the bell tower, which was originally a tower of the medieval castle, and the Notre-Dame chapel. The bell tower is listed.

A guided visit of the village, organised as part of the Pays d'art et d'histoire, lets you discover the church and the architecture of the town, in the heart of a landscape of Gascon hills.
