Lacs de Vens

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The Lacs de Vens form a string of five main glacial lakes, tiered between 2,286 and 2,327 metres' altitude in the Mercantour massif, in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée. The largest, overlooked by the Vens refuge, reaches 31 metres' depth.

You reach them on foot from the hamlet of Le Pra, at Saint-Dalmas-le-Selvage, on the Col de la Bonette road, or from the Gué de Vens and Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, in the upper Tinée. The Le Pra starting point is at about 1,700 metres. It is also possible to reach them from the Italian side, via the Col du Fer, at 2,684 metres. The hike crosses a landscape typical of the Mercantour National Park, among larches, pastures and mineral ridges. The Vens refuge lets you extend the outing at altitude.
