Lac de Vassivière
The Lac de Vassivière is an artificial lake of 9.76 km², created by a dam on the Maulde. In the north-west of the Millevaches plateau, between the Creuse and the Haute-Vienne, it is one of the largest bodies of water in the Limousin.
The lake is a place for outdoor leisure: several beaches supervised in summer, hire of canoes, pedal boats, catamarans and paddleboards, and a path around the shores for walking or cycling.
In the middle of the lake, the island of Vassivière, reached by a footbridge, is home to the International Centre for Art and Landscape, in a building designed by Aldo Rossi, and an open-air contemporary sculpture park open all year. The site suits families, sports enthusiasts and lovers of nature and contemporary art, among forests and moorland.
