La Pierre tremblante
The Pierre Tremblante is a monolith about seven metres high set on the wild coast of the Île d'Yeu, in the Vendée, a few hundred metres from the Port de la Meule. Renowned for its balance, this granite block tilts a few centimetres towards the sea when pushed regularly at its centre.
The neighbouring Port de la Meule is a small natural cove cut in the rock, where a breakwater was built in the nineteenth century to secure the tiny fishing harbour. The site already appears on old engravings and postcards, proof of long-standing renown.
The Pierre Tremblante is reached on foot by the coastal paths on the island's south side, which alternate cliffs, coves and heaths. It is a stage appreciated by walkers and hikers who go round the Île d'Yeu, a territory where you gauge the force of the ocean.
