Ile de Sein
A former megalithic site then druidic retreat, the island of "Sena" was described by a Roman geographer as early as the year 43 of our era. Such a venerable past may surprise for a small island that gives an apparent impression of fragility because it was submerged twice, in 1868 and 1896. Without being a major tourist centre, it nevertheless attracts many visitors, charmed by the strong personality of its inhabitants, its unchanging traditions and the unspoilt beauty of its landscapes. The Senans, renowned for centuries for the courage with which they rescue the shipwrecked, won a new title of glory in 1940 when all the men (150 in total) left the island for England to join de Gaulle and the Free French forces.
