Gruissan
Gruissan has a rare silhouette: its old village grew in concentric circles around the Barberousse, the ruined tower of a medieval castle that still overlooks the commune from its rocky peak. This circular plan, inherited from the original fortified village, makes it one of the urban curiosities of the Aude coast.
The commune also stretches along a lagoon strip between salt lagoons and the Mediterranean, where the stilt-chalet district of Gruissan-Plage — made famous by the film Betty Blue (37°2 le matin) — is strung along the sand. The surrounding salt marshes and many lagoons also make it a site appreciated by bird lovers.
