Grotte des Korrigans

Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire

Carved into the gneiss of the wild coast of the Guérande peninsula, near the Pointe de Penchâteau at Le Pouliguen, in the Loire-Atlantique, this sea cave about thirty metres long is the second longest in the département. It has two entrances: a side fissure and an opening facing the open sea, submerged at high tide.

Its name comes from the Breton legend of the korrigans, mischievous little beings to whom local tradition attributes an underground passage leading to Guérande. Since the 19th century the site has inspired poets and musicians of the region, including Dr Foulon in 1859.
