Grotte de Lacave

Lot, Occitanie

The Lacave caves are in the Lot, in the commune of Lacave, not far from the Dordogne and Rocamadour. Discovered in the early twentieth century by Armand Viré (sources give 1902 or 1905), they have long been visited thanks to a small electric train that takes visitors about 400 metres under the hill.

The guided visit of about an hour and a quarter begins in the Chaos hall and ends in the Hall of Marvels, of about 2,000 m². This hall is highlighted by a black light that brings out phosphorescent concretions. The route crosses several halls adorned with stalactites, stalagmites and draperies, including the Lake hall.

The galleries formed over more than 150 million years. The site is visited in season, with opening periods that vary by year.
