Dolmen de Bagneux

Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire

The Bagneux dolmen, in Saumur, in the Maine-et-Loire, is one of the largest dolmens in Europe. Built about 5,000 years ago, it is more than twenty metres long, and consists of an immense burial chamber covered with sandstone slabs weighing several tonnes. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1840 and now rises in a public garden, surrounded by trees.

You can visit it and contemplate close up the size of the blocks, which evoke the know-how of Neolithic builders. Its discovery combines with the visit of Saumur, its castle, its troglodyte cellars and the Loire valley, or with the many other megalithic monuments of Anjou.
