Condom
The historic capital of the Bas-Armagnac, in the Gers, Condom owed its past prosperity to the trade in the brandy that bears the region's name, still visible in the elegant merchants' mansions lining its streets.
The Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, an imposing 16th-century Gothic building, dominates the town with its Renaissance cloister, while the shady quays along the Baïse, once used by gabares laden with barrels, invite a stroll. A stage on the route to Santiago de Compostela, towards the nearby village of La Romieu, Condom remains a centre of Armagnac production and trade, with several historic houses opening their cellars to visitors.
