Colmars

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Colmars, also called Colmars-les-Alpes, is a fortified village of the Haut-Verdon, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Surrounded by its ramparts, its gates and two forts built under Louis XIV, Fort de Savoie and Fort de France, it keeps the look of a small mountain stronghold.

The cobbled lanes, fountains, stone houses and plane-shaded little squares are discovered on foot in about an hour. Colmars also serves as a starting point for hikes in the upper Verdon, towards Lac d'Allos, the Col des Champs and the alpine pastures. It is an appreciated stop between Barcelonnette, Annot and the Verdon gorges.
