Castellane
One of the least populated sub-prefectures in France, Castellane was built at the foot of an impressive limestone rock crowned by the chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Roc, reached by a steep path offering a panorama over the whole Verdon valley.
The old town has kept remains of its ramparts and a lively square around its church of Saint-Victor. An essential stop before entering the nearby Verdon gorges, Castellane is also a high place for white-water sports, canoeing and rafting on the Verdon.
