Cité des télécoms

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne

The Cité des Télécoms is a museum and leisure park devoted to telecommunications, at Pleumeur-Bodou, on Brittany's Pink Granite Coast. Opened in 1991, it has belonged to the Orange Foundation since 2006.

It is built around the Radôme, a huge white inflatable dome that protected a horn antenna. Built in nine months, between October 1961 and July 1962, for the first live television link between the United States and Europe via the Telstar 1 satellite, it continued to receive satellite transmissions until 1985. The dome hosts a sound-and-light show on its history, and monumental projections are sometimes organised.

The route explores more than two centuries of communication, from pioneers such as Chappe, Morse and Bell to today's connected world, with topics such as undersea fibre-optic cables. The site is visited as a family, with a playful approach, and continues at the neighbouring Planétarium de Bretagne.
