Citadelle de Bonifacio

Corse-du-Sud, Corse

While the citadel of Bastia recalls the long Genoese rule over the island, that of Bonifacio, in the Corse-du-Sud, is Corsica's first stronghold. In the name of the Pope, the lord Boniface had a fortress built here in 830, to which he gave his name.

It was later altered and enlarged in line with advances in military techniques. Standing west of the upper town on a narrow plateau, the citadel was intended to protect the southern coast against Saracen raids.
