Cirque de Courossé

Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire

The Courossé cirque is a listed natural site of the Mauges, in Maine-et-Loire, in the new commune of Mauges-sur-Loire (La Chapelle-Saint-Florent). It is a meander of the Èvre, a small tributary of the Loire, which narrows between two hillsides and takes on the look of a gorge. The site has been protected since 1995 and covers about 145 hectares.

The cliff, made of mica schist, overlooks the river by about sixty metres. A path quickly leads to a panoramic viewpoint, and a trail marked with interpretation panels lets you discover the place. You can notice in particular an old millers' village, an island linked by a causeway over the Èvre and a tree-lined path at the top of the rock. This green setting, ideal for walking and picnicking, offers an unexpected contrast with the gentle landscape of the surrounding bocage.
