Château de Challain-la-Potherie
The Château de Challain-la-Potherie, in the Maine-et-Loire, is a neo-Gothic château built between 1847 and 1854 by the Angevin architect René Hodé, who designed many châteaux in a similar style. An earlier design by Louis Visconti is said to have served as the basis for his plans.
The owner, the Count de La Rochefoucauld, died before the château was finished; his wife and son completed the work, laying out the park, the moats and the orangery.
The estate includes a romantic park of about thirty hectares. The château, the outbuildings and the park with its boundary wall have been listed as historic monuments since 2004. The château is mainly visited by groups, on request. It also offers guest rooms and can be hired for receptions.
