Chemin de fer de La Mure

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Yesterday a mining railway, today this mountain tourist line is recognised as the most spectacular in the Alps and one of the most prestigious in the world. Now a hundred years old, the La Mure railway offers, at the gates of Grenoble (20 km to the south), a marvellous railway ride. 30 km of "Grand Spectacle" between Saint-Georges-de-Commiers and La Mure, in an enchanting setting of gorges, lakes, cliffs and summits.

The La Mure railway, or little train of La Mure, is a narrow-gauge railway that became in 1989 a tourist line linking Saint-Georges-de-Commiers to La Mure, in the south of the Isère. After the massive rockfall of 26 October 2010 from a cliff overlooking the line, service has been interrupted: only the Mine Image museum, at La Motte-d'Aveillans, remains open.
