Château du Landskron
Still within rifle range of the Franco-Swiss border, the fortress of Landskron, which overlooks the village of Leymen in the Haut-Rhin from its hill, has always served to stand guard at the edge of a state. It was later used as a prison and was even nicknamed the 'Alsatian Bastille'.
A massive gateway dated 1515 leads into the lower courtyard through the Habsburg curtain wall. There are the remains of buildings from various periods, from the Gothic age to the 17th century, and finally the original 12th-century keep, which crowns a rocky peak.
